Ring after ring of petals narrows toward a dark center in this circular mandala, creating the impression of looking down a carved tunnel. The outer edge is scalloped with arched petals, and finer lattice bands fill the rings between them. Eight layers make the depth effect possible, letting the eye travel inward through a sequence of stacked tiers.

A round piece like this works well in a reading nook, a bedroom or above a fireplace mantel. To exaggerate the tunnel, stain the inner rings progressively darker and keep the outermost ring light; a single wood tone also looks good, but graded color makes the depth obvious even in soft light.
