Christmas Origins
The first mention of Christmas dates back to the first half of the 4th century. In fact, it was noted in the manuscripts of Matthew and Luke that the rise of the first evening star on the night of December 25 marked the birth of the Son of God.
Little Christ was born in a cave where shepherds sheltered their livestock from bad weather. The fact that the Savior had come into the world was announced by the angels to the shepherds, who went to the cave and bowed to the newborn. After that, the Magi, guided by the light of a bright star, brought their gifts to the Son of God, which were incense, gold, and myrrh. It was this scene that became the main symbol of the holiday. The date of the celebration was set back in 431 AD at the Third Ecumenical Council, which took place in the city of Ephesus.
Christmas Celebration and Traditions
Preparations for Christmas begin after Thanksgiving Day, which is celebrated at the end of November (the last Thursday of the month). The sales season begins and everyone gets Christmas trees, buys gifts, and decorates houses and streets. Traditionally, Christmas in America is celebrated on December 25th. This is a national holiday, so many government offices, shops, cafes, and many other institutions are closed during this period, although it varies from state to state.
Christmas is a religious holiday, although there are many secular traditions associated with it, such as Santa Claus, gifts, and so on. However, many traditions of celebrating Christmas have been established in American culture.
On the morning of Christmas Eve, religious people go to church services and make confessions, and in the evening families get together for the holiday dinner. If it is a religious family, the festive dinner traditionally consists of lean dishes since those families maintain the Lent. Before the dinner begins, the head of the family reads aloud a passage from the Gospel of Luke about the birth of Jesus Christ and after that, Christmas Eve dinner begins.
After the festive dinner, everyone exchanges gifts. At the same time, kids wait for Santa to bring them presents. According to the legend, Santa only brings presents to those kids who were nice the entire year and obeyed their parents. Santa delivers the gifts late at night, so kids only find those the next morning, which is known as Boxing Day since people open their gifts on this day. Because Santa comes late at night, there is a sweet tradition of leaving some cookies for him as gratitude for his presents.
Another lovely tradition is singing Christmas carols. The most popular among Americans are Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Silent Night. As a rule, families sing the carols during the festive dinner. Sometimes on Christmas Eve, you can see choirs performing the carols in the streets. Children, dressed in angel costumes, sing Christmas carols, praise God and the birth of his son Jesus. In schools, kids usually have Christmas theater performances, so parents frequently attend those.
As we have already mentioned above, festive dinner is the most popular tradition so naturally, it includes many traditional meals. The main Christmas dish is baked turkey or other types of poultry such as duck, chicken, etc. As a side dish, Americans prefer to eat Brussels sprouts, fried potatoes, boiled or steamed vegetables, or beans. For dessert people usually have fruitcakes. It is a cake with nuts and dried fruits. What is interesting about this cake is the fact that another meaning of the word Fruitcake is “weirdo,” so there are many jokes associated with this dessert.
Certainly, the gingerbread man is another traditional Christmas dessert. In fact, it is widely known all over the world and is a culinary symbol of Christmas. Fun fact about gingerbread man is that for the first time these hilarious human-shaped cookies appeared at the court of Queen Elizabeth I and those “little men” were outwardly similar to some of her important guests.
Speaking of drinks, people prefer hot chocolate or cocoa. Some families enjoy good wine or punch. But a true Christmas drink is definitely eggnog, a sweet drink based on raw chicken eggs and milk. However, many people prefer not to have this traditional drink because consuming raw eggs might be dangerous.
In general, Christmas celebrations in America are with no exaggeration epic, so no wonder that many people love Christmas and wait for it the entire year.
