The harakeke plant (Phormium tenax) is an ever-green perennial plant native to New Zealand and Norfolk Island that is an important fibre plant and a popular ornamental plant. In the māori culture it is one of the most utilised plants and is considered sacred. It represents the whānau (family) and whanaungatanga (relationships). The rito (shoot) is the child. It is protectively surrounded
 by the awhi rito (parents). The outside leaves represent the tūpuna (grandparents and ancestors).
