The term Buddha literally means enlightened one, a knower. Buddhists believe that a Buddha is born in each a eon of time, and our Buddha—the sage Gotama who attained enlightenment under the bo tree at Buddha Gaya in India—was the seventh in the succession.
Following this epiphany, Gautama was known as the Buddha, meaning the “Enlightened One.” The Buddha spent the remainder of his life journeying about India, teaching others what he had come to understand.
