Well, we had a nice little vacation from sanity, filled with all manner of unexpected death and destruction,
but now we’re back and totally unprepared for anything! And of course, that means MORE KRACKLE! [We know, y’all just can’t get enough of this stuff, and we’re only too eager to please!]
Once again, for those of you outside the seedy loop of comics history, the quick and simple rundown is that over half a century ago a funnybook artist by the name of Jack “King” Kirby drew some circles in a panel where he wanted to show untethered, unbridled power. The inker didn’t quite get it. But Kirby kept drawing those little circles and inkers kept tweaking things until some time in the early 1960’s when everything began to take shape.
By 1966 “Joltin” Joe Sinnott had been inking Kirby for a while and between the two they had perfected what is known today as Kirby Krackle. And since that time it has taken on many forms: power blasts, fiery conflagrations, underwater miasmas, cosmic backgrounds, and everything in-between! There are literally as many styles of krackle as there are artists who’ve depicted it, but here at category4 we’re kind of sweet on the Kirby/Sinnott style: slightly wonky, circular black blobs, packed tight and highlighted in glorious color! And that’s what we provide in our King Krackle series; slightly wonky cosmic power!
Of course, you could do this all by hand, and honestly we love that method, but in the digital world that can get tiresome and complicated. King Krackle takes the tedium out and lets you focus on the creativity! Once the brush has been applied you can just let it ride, or convert to shapes, delete the empty bounding boxes and edit the remaining krackle to suit your project. It’s that easy!
